Story
. Lucía . , . , . , , .
It is Saturday morning. Lucía leaves her house and walks to Calle Mayor. The stalls are there every week, and she goes every Saturday. It is something of always, something good. People are chatting, kids are playing near the door of the old shop, and the food stalls are full of people.
Lucía . , . . ", Lucía," . "¿ ?" . " ," . " ."
Lucía looks at the things she wants to buy. She doesn't have much money today, but she's going to take something home. The older man at the first stall knows her well. "Hello, Lucía," he says. "How's everything?" She gives him a small smile. "Everything's fine," she says. "Same as always."
, . "¿Lucía? ¿ ?" Lucía quieta. , . . . . . ¿ ?
While she's beside the stall, she hears a voice near her. "Lucía? Is that you?" Lucía stops. It's a voice she doesn't quite remember, a voice from another time. She turns her face and looks at the man standing there. She doesn't know who he is. She looks at him a bit more. He has the eyes of someone she knows. But from where?
" , ," . " . ¿ acuerdas?" Lucía . ¡! muchos . , . . : "¡! ¡, !"
"It's me, Tomás," the man says. "From school. Do you remember?" Lucía's eyes open wide. Tomás! That was many years ago. She was a small girl, and he was an older boy in the same class. The surprise is so big she can't speak. Then she says: "Tomás! No, I can't believe it's you!"
ríe. risa , , . Lucía . "¡ !" . "¿ ? ." . , .
Tomás laughs. It's the same laugh as before, the same boyish face, but now with less hair and more years. Lucía isn't a little girl any more either. "It's been so long!" she says. "What are you doing here? I thought you weren't in the city any more." Tomás says he came back three months ago. He lives nearby, with his wife and small son.
"¿ ?" . "¿ ? ¿ ?" Lucía , . : , , . . " verte," . " muchas , ¿? ."
"And you?" Tomás asks her. "Are you well? Do you live near here?" Lucía says yes, that her house is two streets further on. She tells him a bit about her life: her job, her mother who is very old now, her two children who are already at school. Tomás listens with a smile. "It's so good to see you," he says. "I thought about you many times, you know? I wanted to know where you were."
Lucía . . " ," . " . ." , . : ", ¿ ? ." Lucía . .
Lucía feels something in her face. She doesn't know whether it's the surprise or the morning sun. "I thought about you too," she says. "But it was so long ago. It's another life." The two stay quiet a moment, between the stalls and the passing people. Then Tomás says: "Hey, shall we have a coffee? There's a good place right here." Lucía looks at the stalls. She still hasn't bought anything.
"," . " , . ." . Lucía . , , .
"Yes," she says. "A coffee, why not. Things can wait." The two of them walk together to the shop on the other street. Lucía can't remember the last time she was so happy about something so small. Just a Saturday morning, just an old friend, just a coffee between two people who used to be different.
