What Data We Collect and Why

Newsletter subscriptions

If you sign up to our newsletter, we store your email address. We use it solely to send you our newsletter. We do not share or sell it. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any newsletter email. Your address is removed from active sending within 24 hours and permanently deleted from our system within 7 days.

  • Data held: Email address
  • Legal basis: Consent (Article 6(1)(a) UK GDPR)
  • Retention: Until you unsubscribe (deleted within 7 days of unsubscribing)

Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how visitors use the site in aggregate (which articles are most read, which tools are used). This only activates if you accept non-essential cookies on the consent banner. If you decline, no analytics tracking is set.

  • Data held: Anonymised usage data (pages visited, session duration). No personally identifiable information is collected via analytics.
  • Legal basis: Consent (Article 6(1)(a) UK GDPR)
  • Retention: We retain anonymised analytics data for 14 months in line with Google Analytics defaults. You can request earlier deletion by contacting us.

Advertising (Google AdSense)

We use Google AdSense to display advertisements on the Site. Advertising is the way we fund the editorial content. Google and its partners may use cookies (including the DoubleClick DART cookie) and similar technologies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this site or other sites on the internet. Ad cookies are only set if you accept non-essential cookies on the consent banner.

  • Data held by Google: Ad interaction signals, device and browser identifiers, approximate location derived from IP, ad-targeting preferences. Google processes this data under its own privacy policy.
  • Legal basis: Consent (Article 6(1)(a) UK GDPR)

Third-Party Services

  • Amazon Web Services (AWS) - provides our hosting (S3, CloudFront) and, if applicable, the newsletter mailer (Lambda, DynamoDB, SES). Data is processed in the eu-west-2 (London) region.
  • Google Analytics - website analytics, activated only with your consent. Google's privacy policy: policies.google.com/privacy.
  • Google AdSense - displays advertisements, activated only with your consent. Advertising policies: policies.google.com/technologies/ads.

Your Rights Under UK GDPR

  • Right to rectification - ask us to correct inaccurate data
  • Right to erasure - ask us to delete your data
  • Right to restriction - ask us to limit how we process your data
  • Right to portability - request a copy in a machine-readable format
  • Right to object - object to processing based on legitimate interests
  • Right to withdraw consent - withdraw at any time without affecting the lawfulness of prior processing

Children

This site is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.
