El primer día de Laura

Story

Hoy es el primer día de Laura en la oficina nueva. El trabajo está en el centro y Laura tiene que llegar a las ocho y media. Sale de casa muy pronto. Su madre le dice adiós desde la puerta. Laura lleva un papel con el nombre del jefe y el número del piso. Tiene un poco de miedo, pero piensa que todo va a salir bien.

Today is Laura's first day at the new office. The job is in the centre, and Laura has to arrive at half past eight. She leaves the house very early. Her mother says goodbye to her from the door. Laura is carrying a piece of paper with the name of the boss and the number of the floor. She is a little afraid, but she thinks everything is going to go well.

En la calle hay mucha gente. Laura busca el sitio en el teléfono, pero el teléfono ya no tiene fuerza. No lo puede creer. Hace un momento estaba bien. Ahora no sabe por dónde ir. Pregunta a un hombre amable. El hombre le dice que la oficina está cerca, a dos calles. Laura le da las gracias y va rápido por la calle.

In the street, there are lots of people. Laura looks for the place on her phone, but the phone has no power any more. She cannot believe it. A moment ago it was fine. Now she does not know which way to go. She asks a friendly man. The man tells her the office is close, two streets away. Laura thanks him and walks quickly down the street.

Llega al sitio a las ocho y diez. No es tarde, pero tampoco es pronto. Entra y mira a la mujer de la mesa de la puerta. "Hola, soy Laura. Es mi primer día." La mujer mira un papel. "¿Laura qué?" Laura le dice su nombre. La mujer mira otra vez el papel. "Aquí no estás. ¿Estás cierta de que es hoy?" Laura siente algo malo dentro.

She arrives at the place at ten past eight. She is not late, but she is not early either. She walks in and looks at the woman at the desk by the door. "Hello, I'm Laura. It's my first day." The woman looks at a sheet of paper. "Laura what?" Laura tells her her name. The woman looks at the paper again. "You're not on here. Are you sure it's today?" Laura feels something bad inside.

"Sí, claro," dice Laura. "Mi jefe es el señor Ramírez. Tengo una reunión a las ocho y media." La mujer hace una llamada. Habla con alguien tres minutos. Después mira a Laura. "El señor Ramírez no está hoy. Está en otro lugar. Nadie sabía que tú venías hoy." Laura no puede decir nada. Se queda en silencio frente a la mesa.

"Yes, of course," says Laura. "My boss is Mr Ramírez. I have a meeting at half past eight." The woman makes a phone call. She talks to someone for three minutes. Then she looks at Laura. "Mr Ramírez is not in today. He's in another place. Nobody knew you were coming today." Laura cannot say anything. She stands in silence in front of the desk.

La mujer ve la cara de Laura y le habla con una voz más amable. "Ven, te llevo al piso de los jefes. Vas a hablar con Marta. Marta es la jefa de Ramírez. Ella va a saber qué hacer." Laura va con la mujer hasta el piso tres. El sitio es muy grande y bonito, pero Laura no mira nada. Solo piensa en su madre, en su teléfono sin fuerza, en el día que ya no parece un buen día.

The woman sees the look on Laura's face and speaks to her in a kinder voice. "Come on, I'll take you up to the bosses' floor. You're going to talk to Marta. Marta is Ramírez's boss. She'll know what to do." Laura goes with the woman up to the third floor. The place is very big and pretty, but Laura looks at nothing. She just thinks about her mother, about her phone with no power, about the day that no longer feels like a good day.

Marta es una mujer alta, con los ojos buenos y la cara amable. Habla con Laura diez minutos. "Tienes razón. Empiezas hoy. Ramírez tiene la culpa, porque no me dijo nada. Es la verdad. Pero no es un problema grande. Vamos a empezar ahora, tú y yo." Marta le da un café y un papel con cosas pequeñas para hacer el primer día. Laura siente algo bueno otra vez.

Marta is a tall woman, with kind eyes and a friendly face. She talks to Laura for ten minutes. "You're right. You do start today. Ramírez is the one at fault, because he didn't tell me anything. That's the truth. But it isn't a big problem. We're going to start now, you and I." Marta gives her a coffee and a sheet of paper with small things to do on the first day. Laura feels something good again.

A las dos de la tarde, Laura come con dos personas nuevas. Son amables y hacen preguntas normales. Una persona le pregunta cómo fue su mañana. Laura mira el agua sobre la mesa y dice la verdad: "Mal. Muy mal. Pero ahora todo está mejor." Las dos personas hacen una cara contenta. Laura también. Piensa que mañana, probablemente, va a ser un día normal. Y un día normal, hoy, le parece la cosa más bonita del mundo.

At two in the afternoon, Laura has lunch with two new people. They are friendly and ask normal questions. One person asks her how her morning went. Laura looks at the water on the table and tells the truth: "Bad. Very bad. But now everything is better." The two people make a happy face. Laura too. She thinks that tomorrow, probably, will be a normal day. And a normal day, today, seems to her the loveliest thing in the world.
