Story

今jīn天tiān晚wǎn上shàng，王wáng家jiā的de人rén都dōu在zài家jiā里lǐ。妈mā妈ma在zài做zuò饭fàn，爸bà爸ba看kàn电diàn视shì，女nǚ儿ér小xiǎo美měi在zài房fáng子zi里lǐ。大dà家jiā都dōu没méi有yǒu说shuō话huà。

This evening, the Wang family is at home. Mum is making dinner, dad is watching television, daughter Xiao Mei is in her room. Nobody is talking.

吃chī饭fàn的de时shí候hòu，妈mā妈ma先xiān说shuō话huà了liǎo。她tā说shuō：「今jīn年nián我wǒ们men去qù哪nǎ里lǐ？我wǒ想xiǎng去qù美měi国guó。我wǒ一yì直zhí想xiǎng去qù美měi国guó。」

At dinner, mum is the first to speak. She says: "Where shall we go this year? I want to go to America. I've always wanted to go to America."

爸bà爸ba听tīng了liǎo，放fàng下xià了liǎo筷kuài子zǐ。他tā说shuō：「美měi国guó？太tài远yuǎn了liǎo。坐zuò飞fēi机jī要yào很hěn多duō个gè小xiǎo时shí。还hái要yào很hěn多duō钱qián。我wǒ们men没méi有yǒu这zhè么me多duō钱qián。」

Dad listens, then puts down his chopsticks. He says: "America? Too far. The plane takes many hours. And it needs a lot of money. We don't have that much money."

妈mā妈ma不bù高gāo兴xìng。她tā说shuō：「钱qián的de问wèn题tí，可kě以yǐ想xiǎng办bàn法fǎ。这zhè不bú是shì大dà问wèn题tí。我wǒ们men每měi年nián都dōu不bù出chū去qù。今jīn年nián应yīng该gāi去qù一yí个gè新xīn的de地dì方fāng。」

Mum is not pleased. She says: "Money is a problem we can find a way around. That's not the big problem. We don't go out every year. This year we should go somewhere new."

爸bà爸ba说shuō：「我wǒ也yě想xiǎng去qù新xīn的de地dì方fāng，可kě是shì不bù一yí定dìng要yào去qù美měi国guó。我wǒ们men可kě以yǐ去qù近jìn一yì点diǎn的de地dì方fāng。在zài家jiā里lǐ也yě很hěn好hǎo。家jiā里lǐ有yǒu床chuáng，有yǒu饭fàn，有yǒu这zhè里lǐ的de朋péng友yǒu。这zhè样yàng不bú是shì很hěn好hǎo吗ma？」

Dad says: "I'd like to go somewhere new too, but it doesn't have to be America. We can go somewhere closer. Home is good too. At home there's a bed, food, our friends here. Isn't this good?"

小xiǎo美měi一yì直zhí没méi有yǒu说shuō话huà。现xiàn在zài她tā说shuō了liǎo：「爸bà爸ba，每měi年nián你nǐ都dōu说shuō在zài家jiā里lǐ好hǎo。可kě是shì我wǒ们men每měi年nián都dōu在zài家jiā里lǐ。我wǒ也yě想xiǎng出chū去qù看kàn看kàn。我wǒ的de朋péng友yǒu们men都dōu去qù过guò很hěn多duō地dì方fāng。」

Xiao Mei has been quiet. Now she speaks: "Dad, every year you say home is good. But every year we stay at home. I want to go out and see things too. My friends have all been to lots of places."

爸bà爸ba看kàn了liǎo她tā一yí下xià。他tā说shuō：「你nǐ还hái是shì孩hái子zi。你nǐ不bù知zhī道dào钱qián的de事shì。」

Dad glances at her. He says: "You're still a child. You don't understand about money."

小xiǎo美měi有yǒu一yì点diǎn生shēng气qì了liǎo。她tā说shuō：「我wǒ不bú是shì孩hái子zi了liǎo！我wǒ十shí六liù岁suì了liǎo。爸bà爸ba，我wǒ知zhī道dào钱qián的de事shì。我wǒ也yě知zhī道dào你nǐ工gōng作zuò很hěn累lèi。可kě是shì一yì年nián一yí次cì，我wǒ们men可kě以yǐ一yì起qǐ去qù一yí个gè地dì方fāng，好hǎo不bù好hǎo？」

Xiao Mei gets a bit cross. She says: "I'm not a child! I'm sixteen. Dad, I know about money. I know you work hard too. But once a year, can't we all go somewhere together?"

妈mā妈ma听tīng到dào这zhè些xiē话huà，笑xiào了liǎo。她tā说shuō：「小xiǎo美měi说shuō得dé对duì。爸bà爸ba，你nǐ听tīng一yí下xià女nǚ儿ér的de话huà。」

When mum hears this, she smiles. She says: "Xiao Mei is right. Listen to your daughter for once."

爸bà爸ba没méi有yǒu说shuō话huà。他tā看kàn着zhe饭fàn，想xiǎng了liǎo想xiǎng。然rán后hòu他tā说shuō：「好hǎo吧ba。可kě是shì美měi国guó太tài远yuǎn。我wǒ们men可kě以yǐ去qù近jìn一yì点diǎn的de地dì方fāng。」

Dad doesn't say anything. He looks at his food and thinks. Then he says: "All right. But America is too far. We can go somewhere closer."

小xiǎo美měi高gāo兴xìng了liǎo。她tā说shuō：「我wǒ有yǒu一yí个gè朋péng友yǒu，她tā去qù年nián去qù了liǎo一yí个gè城chéng市shì，很hěn有yǒu意yì思sī。她tā告gào诉sù我wǒ那nà里lǐ很hěn好hǎo。我wǒ们men可kě以yǐ去qù那nà个ge地dì方fāng。」

Xiao Mei is happy. She says: "I have a friend who went to a city last year, and it was really interesting. She told me it was great. We could go there."

妈mā妈ma说shuō：「这zhè个ge想xiǎng法fǎ不bú错cuò。不bú是shì美měi国guó，可kě是shì也yě是shì新xīn的de地dì方fāng。爸bà爸ba，你nǐ看kàn怎zěn么me样yàng？」

Mum says: "That's a good idea. Not America, but still somewhere new. Dad, what do you think?"

爸bà爸ba看kàn了liǎo妈mā妈ma，又yòu看kàn了liǎo女nǚ儿ér。他tā笑xiào了liǎo一yí下xià。他tā说shuō：「好hǎo。我wǒ同tóng意yì。可kě是shì你nǐ们men要yào先xiān告gào诉sù我wǒ，去qù多duō少shǎo天tiān，要yào多duō少shǎo钱qián。这zhè些xiē事shì我wǒ们men一yì起qǐ想xiǎng。」

Dad looks at mum, then at his daughter. He gives a small smile. He says: "All right. I agree. But you have to tell me first, how many days and how much money. We work that out together."

大dà家jiā都dōu很hěn高gāo兴xìng。小xiǎo美měi说shuō：「太tài好hǎo了le！我wǒ以yǐ后hòu告gào诉sù你nǐ们men我wǒ朋péng友yǒu说shuō的de事shì。」

Everyone is pleased. Xiao Mei says: "Brilliant! I'll tell you later what my friend said."

晚wǎn饭fàn以yǐ后hòu，妈mā妈ma在zài家jiā里lǐ走zǒu来lái走zǒu去qù。她tā在zài想xiǎng：今jīn年nián的de这zhè个ge地dì方fāng，一yí定dìng要yào好hǎo。爸bà爸ba坐zuò着zhe没méi有yǒu动dòng，可kě是shì他tā心xīn里lǐ也yě在zài想xiǎng这zhè个ge事shì。他tā想xiǎng：女nǚ儿ér大dà了liǎo。我wǒ们men应yīng该gāi跟gēn她tā一yì起qǐ做zuò这zhè种zhǒng决jué定dìng。

After dinner, mum walks around the house. She is thinking: this year's trip has to be good. Dad sits without moving, but inside he's thinking about it too. He thinks: my daughter is grown up. We should make this kind of decision with her.

小xiǎo美měi回huí到dào她tā的de房fáng子zi里lǐ。她tā拿ná出chū电diàn话huà，给gěi她tā的de朋péng友yǒu说shuō：「我wǒ们men家jiā同tóng意yì了liǎo！今jīn年nián我wǒ们men要yào去qù那nà个ge地dì方fāng。你nǐ告gào诉sù我wǒ的de那nà些xiē事shì，我wǒ都dōu要yào看kàn看kàn。」

Xiao Mei goes back to her room. She picks up her phone and tells her friend: "My family said yes! This year we're going to that place. All the things you told me about, I want to see them."

这zhè一yì天tiān的de晚wǎn上shàng，王wáng家jiā的de人rén，每měi个gè人rén心xīn里lǐ都dōu有yǒu一yí个gè新xīn的de想xiǎng法fǎ。一yí个gè家jiā，可kě能néng有yǒu不bù一yí样yàng的de话huà，可kě是shì也yě可kě以yǐ有yǒu一yí样yàng的de高gāo兴xìng。

That evening, in the Wang household, each person has a new idea in mind. A family may say different things, but they can also share the same happiness.
