What does this mean?
Esto is the neuter demonstrative pronoun for something physically or conceptually near the speaker. It refers to concepts, actions, or situations rather than specific gendered nouns. Because it is neuter, it never takes an accent mark (unlike éste, the now-archaic accented form of the masculine demonstrative).
When pointing at a physical object, use the gendered forms este (masculine) or esta (feminine) once you know the noun's gender. Esto is reserved for the moment before you name the thing, for abstract situations, or for referring back to an entire clause just mentioned.
