Trop est un adverbe d'intensité ou de quantité excessive. Devant un adjectif ou un autre adverbe, il exprime l'excès : trop grand, trop vite. Devant un nom avec de, il quantifie en excès : trop de travail, trop d'erreurs (pas d'article après trop de).

À l'oral familier en France, trop est devenu un intensifieur positif chez les jeunes : c'est trop bien (it's really great), il est trop sympa (he's really nice). Cette valeur hyperbolique est absente du registre standard. De trop (too much, one too many, unwanted) est une locution utile : un verre de trop, se sentir de trop.
