Tant est un adverbe de quantité ou d'intensité avec plusieurs emplois. Tant de + nom pluriel ou non-comptable (so many/so much) : tant de gens, tant de travail. Tant que + indicatif (as long as, while) exprime une condition temporelle : tant que tu es là, je me sens bien.

En tant que (as, in the capacity of) est une locution prépositionnelle formelle très utile : en tant que directeur, je décide. Tant mieux (so much the better, good) et tant pis (too bad, never mind) sont des formules incontournables de résignation ou de satisfaction. Si tant est que + subjonctif (if indeed, assuming) est une locution concessive soutenue.
