Amour est masculin au singulier (un grand amour, l'amour éternel) mais devient féminin au pluriel dans la langue poétique classique (les premières amours - a feminine plural surviving from older French). En usage contemporain courant, le pluriel prend le masculin : des amours compliqués.
Tomber amoureux/amoureuse (to fall in love) et être amoureux de (to be in love with) sont les constructions de base. Amour propre (self-esteem, pride) est une notion psychologique importante. Pour l'amour de Dieu ! (for the love of God!, for goodness' sake!) est une exclamation d'exaspération. Coup de foudre (love at first sight, literally a lightning bolt) est l'expression romantique par excellence.
